Hoogwatum is located just northeast of Bierum, directly behind the seawall along the Ems, which is referred to there as the Bocht van Watum. There is a farm on site bearing the same name.
The name refers to a former mound that has disappeared under the seawall. On this mound lay a village of Watum, which had its own chapel in the Middle Ages. The remains of a cemetery belonging to the chapel were found in 1969.
The monumental Hoogwatum farm was set on fire and burned down by the Germans in April 1945. Owner Gerard Elema was shot and died on the way to hospital.
