Under the blessing hands of Christ above the entrance, you enter Bischofswerda, the church that dominates the city. The mosaic picture on the portal was created in 1907 by Dresden art professor Goller. Inside, the eye immediately falls on the large mural above the pulpit, painted in 1889 by Leipzig Professor Winterstein. It shows Christ ascended to heaven and the evangelists. Their gospels are the basis of the sermon from the pulpit below.

Christ Church, Bischofswerda.

Information:

First documented in 1229 as St. Mary's Church, the present-day Christ Church is the third church building to stand on the highest point in the town center. After burning down along with the town in 1469, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1497. Following the introduction of the Reformation in 1558, the name St. Mary's Church was lost. In the first half of the 20th century, the name Christ Church became established due to changes in its design.

Hiking

The Christ Church, rebuilt after a fire in 1813-18, is particularly enchanting due to the unusual colors in the interior (1926, Lossow + Kühne! including Dresden and Görlitz - google the names!), the Christ mosaic on the portal (1907, J. Goller), the altar and the sacristy painting (1927, O. Schindler). A definite recommendation!
