Witzeeze Lock

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal crosses the heights between the Baltic Sea and the Elbe with seven locks. From the Trave to the apex near Mölln, five locks have to be passed on the northern ascent, and on the southern descent to the Elbe there are two locks.
The canal has no natural water inflows and is therefore fed exclusively by rain and melt water. In times of low rainfall, the locks are therefore reduced to what is absolutely necessary, i.e. only commercial shipping is locked, and recreational shipping has to wait for them to be locked. This can take several hours and must be planned for hiking trips.
