Büchen Canal Bridge

There is a curiosity that is probably unique in the Federal Republic of Germany in the municipality of Büchen: since August 1990, the road bridge over the Elbe-Lübeck Canal between Büchen and Büchen-Dorf along Landesstraße 205 has been closed. Inaugurated in 1952 as the largest prestressed concrete bridge in Schleswig-Holstein at the time, the bridge was closed on one side in August 1990 for reasons of reduced load-bearing capacity and stability. The new construction of the bridge, which was planned from 1992 onwards, has not yet taken place.On August 22, 2015, the municipality of Büchen celebrated the 25th "anniversary" of the half-way closure, the festival of the "half bridge" with large participation from the population and the media - including reported the ZDF and the "Autobild" about the event. The plan is now to renew the bridge for container shipping as part of the expansion of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
