The Elbe-Lübeck Canal was built from the old Stecknitz Canal between 1896 and 1900 in just 4 years and was then considered the most modern waterway in Germany. It was inaugurated in June 1900 by Kaiser Wilhelm II with the name Elbe-Trave-Kanal. Renamed the Elbe-Lübeck Canal in 1921.
The Elbe-Lübeck Canal has a length of 65.5 km and connects the Untertrave near Lübeck with the Elbe near Lauenburg. From Schleswig-Holstein, the canal is the shortest waterway to the Baltic Sea.
The canal has a charming bank landscape with avenues made of poplars and many adjacent lakes e.g. Lanzer See and Möllner See. An idyllic trip with the excursion boat "Lüneburger Heide" from Lauenburg to Mölln and back is therefore recommended.
Because of the damaging waves that could destroy the bank reinforcement, watercraft are only allowed to travel at a speed of 10 km / h.
The canal contains 6 locks on its route.
The Schiffer`s Rast inn with overnight accommodation is located directly at the Witzeeze lock. The large terrace invites you to linger.
The canal has an abundant and species-rich fish population. Of course, this is appreciated by fishing enthusiasts who sit everywhere on the bank to outsmart some of the popular pangolins. Passing ships are popular with anglers here. The suction of the ships stirs up food and the fish begins to eat.
