In 1965, the Association of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy proposed for the GDR in Berlin to erect a memorial for the Polish soldiers fighting in the Second World War. Two years later, the governments of the GDR and Poland agreed to devote the monument not only to the Polish soldiers, but also to the German anti-fascists.
