Koningssteen was once a gravel island in the Maas. Such islands lay like pieces of no man's land between both sides of the river. They were allotted to the king's possessions. The area owes its name to the combination of property rights (‘king’) and the gravelly subsoil (‘stone’). Due to major diversions of the Maas between 1743 and 1806, Koningssteen, together with Kollegreend, came to lie on the left side of the bank and its current location was determined. Between 1951 and 1957, the gravel from Koningsteen was extracted. Subsequently, the area was largely filled again with mining stone and gravel residues. Because gravel was also dredged on Flemish territory, a dike was built on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium: the current Koningssteen.
