An old Meuse branch near Stevensweert.
The Meuse water flows into the Oude Maas only from the north. During regular floods, the former branch becomes significantly wider. Starting in 1960, gravel mining was carried out around the Oude Maas, creating two large Meuse plasses in the river: the Molenplas and the Biltplas. After gravel mining ceased in 2009, a large part of the area was designated the "Stevol" nature reserve.
