The approximately 190 cm high bronze statue depicts Reichstruchsess Gunzelin von Wolfenbüttel, the founder of the city of Peine. The monument is a gift from the Pein Merchants' Guild to the city of Peine in memory of the founding of the city by Gunzelin.

The sculpture is a fictional representation of the knight; because a contemporary portrait does not exist. The left hand holds the shield with Gunzelin's seal: the wolf of the Lords of Wolfenbüttel-Asseburg jumping over two sheaves. The coincidence with the current coat of arms of the city of Peine is also important evidence of the founding of the city by Gunzelin.

The exact year of his birth and death are not known (probably around 1175 - 1254/55). He came into possession of Peine Castle around the year 1200 - probably through inheritance. In 1223, Gunzelin founded an urban settlement right next to the castle, from which today's town of Peine developed. After Gunzelin's death, the city and county of Peine fell to the Hildesheim Monastery in 1260.

Inscription: "GRAF GUNZELIN - founder of the city of Peine in 1223 - donated by the merchants' guild in Peine from 1652 AD 1999."

Around 1202, Gunzelin von Wolfenbüttel took over Peine Castle and founded the Peine settlement in 1220. In 1223 Peine received city rights.
