It is a former gravel pond that was developed into a local recreation area after the end of gravel mining and was made available for swimming. The lake was originally created in 1949 to obtain material for filling underground cavities in the Peine mine, which were created in the course of iron ore mining (→Alter Mann). The sand obtained from wet mining with a suction excavator was transported to the mine site using a connecting railway. From a shaft bunker, the sand in the flushing cup was mixed with circulating water and flushed via pipes into the abandoned mining cavities.

The swimming lake is home to a number of leisure facilities (including a volleyball court and a covered barbecue area) and also has a DLRG guard station. Since 1997, the bathing water quality has corresponded to the highest rating level.
