The fountain, which was made from Posta sandstone near Dresden, has stood in the middle of the market square since 1986. The square is surrounded by numerous half-timbered and plastered buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. When the square was restored in 1985, church foundations from the 12th century became visible. A bronze book and colored stones in the pavement of the square mark the location of the first Peine church.
