There was already a fountain on the market square in Seelow before the Second World War. However, it fell victim to the fighting in the Battle of the Seelow Heights in April 1945. It was only decades later, in 1988, that the "Shepherd's Fountain" was built by Horst Engelhardt. But why a shepherd's fountain? In the past, there were numerous sheep farms around Seelow and, on market days, sheep and sheep products were traded on the market square. On a column above a small pedestal stands a roughly life-size bronze sculpture of a naked shepherd who has a sheep on his shoulders like a shawl.
The sculptor Ernst Engelhardt was born in Saxony in 1951. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, Engelhardt settled as a freelance artist near Wriezen in the former GDR district of Frankfurt/Oder in 1976.
