From the family chronicle of the Reinartzhof by Lilly Klinkenberg:
These people worked in this lonely enclave, in the middle of the forest, at the foot of the Fens, without any help such as electricity, water pipes or agricultural machinery. Everything was done by hand using the physical strength available. Agriculture was based only on cattle breeding and dairy farming. In winter, the cattle had to be fed - morning and evening. Of course, milking was done by hand. The milk centrifuge and the butter churn were also operated by hand. Once a week, the products butter and eggs were transported on foot to Eupen in baskets, a journey of around 2 hours. On the way home, the baskets were then refilled with food for the week. They often drowned out their tiredness with hiking songs.

From a hermitage (13th century) on the old pilgrimage route between Aachen and Trier, a small settlement of 3 farms and 6 families, the Reinartzhof, emerged by the 20th century.
Located in the middle of the lonely Fens, the settlement was largely self-sufficient, without electricity or tap water. In 1958 a decree was issued that the settlement had to be evacuated because the neighboring Weser dam was being used to produce drinking water. The last family left their farm in 1971.
      The houses were then destroyed.
