"The first 30 kilometers of the Volme, the Ruhr tributary, characterize the region Oben an der Volme in the Märkisches Sauerland. Its source is on the edge of the built-up inner city area of Meinerzhagen. It flows through a valley that deepens towards the north, mostly surrounded by forests and meadows. As part of the regional history of iron processing and industrial settlement, the course of the Volme is also characterized by industrial settlements. This is why Meinerzhagen, Kierspe, Halver and Schalksmühle are located in the Volmetal and at the same time on the South Westphalia Iron Road - an early trade route for iron ore products from Siegerland to Hagen and Ennepetal.
