In 1388, the Battle of Niftrik took place between Brabant and Gelre. After 1813, Niftrik became an independent municipality. It remained so until 1 January 1818, when it was added to the municipality of Wijchen.
On 10 May 1940, the Dutch army set fire to all buildings above the dike to prevent German troops from using the buildings to shell the Dutch lines at Ravenstein. A third of the village went up in flames.
On 1 September 1944, the railway bridge over the Maas was bombed, killing seven people.
