The narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is a superb way to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the South Lakes. Known affectionately as 'La'al Ratty' (Little Railway), it makes use of the old iron-ore mine that ran up to the tiny village of Boot.

After a ride on La'al Ratty, you could take on an energetic walk to Burnmoor Tarn or ascend England's second highest mountain via its south ridge. For a longer expedition, you could explore the tranquil and wild environs of Upper Eskdale, in the shadow of England's highest mountains. This unfrequented valley is magnificently rugged and unspoilt — a great option for a wild camp.
