This is a magnificent grade I-listed castle with gardens set to the backdrop of the highest mountains in England. The estate began in the 12th century, though the present castle contains many additions and alterations through its 800-year history.
The gardens consist of 77 acres (31 ha) of serene woodland and cultivated lawns. May is the best time to get amongst the riot of colours, when the rhododendrons and azaleas are at their most vibrant.
