Averbode Bos & Heide is actually a whole with surrounding nature reserves and includes various municipalities. At the heritage level, for example, there is "Abbey and forest of Averbode and Gerhagen", which is much more logical since both are only "separated" by one road. Within that area there are also smaller nature reserves and there are also some areas around it, which are often referred to as one whole area. Everything else is actually marketing, just like the Merode landscape park to which Averbode Bos & Heide and Gerhagen belong. The Averbode Bos en Heide nature reserve is located on the border of the provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant and Limburg and is part of the Merode landscape park.
It is freely accessible all year round on the hiking trails.
Prams can go into some lanes, but it gets difficult on the forest paths. Dogs are welcome, but always on a leash of course. The paved lanes are wheelchair accessible. There are also specific trails for horse riders and mountain bikers.
