The name Deurle may have come from Middle Dutch. "Door" would be a corruption of "dor" which would derive from "doort", or "cockle" which would mean some kind of grass growing up among the corn. "Lo", in turn, is a bush on a sandy ridge. So it would be a village where cockatiel grows in the lean fields, and a bush stands on a sand ridge. Via the derivation "door carriage", the toponym could also mean "passage of water".
