Fort Josef was built between 1710 and 1730 according to plans by the master builder Maximilian von Welsch. It was one of the five new forts - also called Schanzen - that formed the second ring of fortresses around Mainz. This had become necessary due to developments in weapon technology. Because the cannons now reached so far that enemy troops could simply shoot over the Schönborn bastions. This is how these advanced - "detached" - forts were laid out.
The actual Fort Josef now consisted of two pointed stone walls, which were connected to the flanks on both sides at the back. The ramparts were arranged in a star shape around this nuclear facility. Until 1905 there was a log house on the wall facing the fortress (the throat). Only the underground casemates remain today.
