Rome in Rossum: named after the city of the same name in Italy. The reason given - in a source from 1849, ed. - is that many Roman antiquities have been found here. (1) According to a local historian, the name derives from romen, which is a local dialect for 'far away', but according to the article that name would only have been given after a flood in 1861 and the name Rome for this hamlet is in any case already mentioned in 1840 (being in the Census of that year).
