The previous building, the so-called castle house, dates from the 14th century. From 1765 to 1803 it was the official residence of the Hochstiftisch Bambergischen keeper. It adorns a baroque facade with a spyhole. The Vilstor was built in 1375 as the main gate towards Bamberg. The coat of arms of the bishopric of Bamberg and of Bishop Lampert von Brunn is still on the facade. The gate got an addition in 1436 with the installation of the city pond. The gate was later used as a powder tower and pharmacy.
