This trail follows part of the route taken by the old Dyke Railway Branch Line, which was built in 1887 to carry passengers from Hove to Devil’s Dyke. Gradually buses became more popular with tourists and the railway became underused, closing in 1938.Now a hard surfaced walking and cycle trail this section of the historical route starts about halfway along the original train line and runs for about 2.5km to the top of the Downs on Devil’s Dyke Road. It’s quite a comfortable gradient and as it’s traffic free it provides a very pleasant alternative to the road routes onto the Downs further east.
