Konstytucji Square was built in 1952 as the central element of the Marszałkowska Housing District (MDM), one of the main projects of socialist realism in Warsaw. Its name commemorates the Constitution of the Polish People's Republic of 1952. The construction of the square required the demolition of many tenement houses and changes to the street layout. It was surrounded by six-story residential buildings with service premises, and the MDM hotel was built on its corner. The square was to be the place where May Day parades ended, and a fountain was initially planned in its center, but a parking lot was eventually built there. In 2019, a plaque was unveiled commemorating the "Niespodzianka" café, where the Warsaw Civic Committee "Solidarity" was located in 1989.
