Artist David Hoppenbrouwers made the artwork 'De Bijeenraad' in 2018 for the province of Flemish Brabant. This work of art, symbolizes the bringing together of flora, fauna and humanity in interdependence. It consists of stacked parts made of concrete. Together they form a composition that depicts a piece of honeycomb. You can climb it and you can sit or lie on it.
At the top is the word 'Apple' in 10 different languages: a reference to the multicultural composition of people working in fruit growing, international export and tourism.
Why a honeycomb? Well, like humans, bees are highly evolved social insects with excellent division of labour, defense and communication. Bees visit and pollinate plants, crops and trees. Worldwide, they maintain 30% of the human food supply! They are therefore invaluable.
