Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth, Vienna-Wieden
The Wieden Elisabeth Church is a free-standing church on St. Elisabeth Square in the 4th district of Wieden in Vienna. The Roman Catholic parish church was consecrated to St. Elisabeth in 1868 and has been the parish church of the newly built "Parish of the Good News" since January 1, 2017.[1] It belongs to the city deanery 4/5 in the vicariate of Vienna City of the Archdiocese of Vienna. The church is a listed building.
By a decree of the Ministry of Culture dated April 10, 1857, the new church was ordered to be built, which was to be financed from the funds of the Religious Fund. The church was planned by the architect Hermann von Bergmann. In March 1859 he presented the plans and was entrusted with completion by the end of 1862. However, this schedule could not be met. It was not until 1866, the day before Empress Elisabeth's name day on November 18th, that the new parish church on the Wieden was ceremoniously consecrated. The actual consecration finally took place two years later on October 8th, 1868. After 1945, the vault and the altars were restored.

In the middle of the 19th century, there was no Catholic suburban parish church in the area of the Oberen Wieden, which was becoming more and more built up. A decree by the Ministry of Culture dated April 10, 1857 ordered a new church to be built with a capacity for 3,000 people. The ceremonial consecration of the newly built church took place on November 18, 1866, which prompted the parish community to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the parish church of St. Elisabeth in 2016. The beautiful, historicizing neo-Gothic church made of raw bricks with accents of light stone (architect: Hermann Bergmann) has an 80 meter high tower set into the main facade, which is the fifth highest church tower in Vienna. The church is a three-aisled staggered church with a slightly projecting transept and a polygonal chancel in the south.
