    Hiking

On Hodenpijl was a parish church built in 1840 and dedicated to James the Greater. The church was built according to a neoclassical design by the Hague architect Arend Roodenburg. The accompanying rectory 'de Herdershof' was built in 1872, but the accompanying house chapel is older. This was built in 1720 to replace a church that stood on the other side of the canal. In 1963 the last Holy Mass was celebrated in the church building after 120 years.

The name "Op Hodenpijl" has been the popular place designation for generations.

In the 13th century, the Hodenpijl family attached its name to a castle located in the Hodenpijl Polder (now Klaas Engelbrechtspolder). The castle was destroyed in 1351 during the Hook and Cod Wars.

Since 1657, there had been a clandestine church on Hodenpijl, on the "narrow side" of the Kerkpolder. Father Gerardus Schade was the first priest to settle here after the Reformation. In this church, the Delft painter Johannes Vermeer married Catharina Bolnes in April 1653.
