The imposing building opposite the castle was the rent office of the Lords of Venningen and is also the birthplace of the freedom fighter and revolutionary Friedrich Hecker from Baden. He lived from 1811 to 1881 and was one of the most popular speakers of the German Revolution in Baden in 1848/49. He was also the leader of the revolutionary uprising, which went down in history as the "Heckerzug" and which moved from Constance in April 1848 against the Karlsruhe residence. However, this uprising was already suppressed in the southern Black Forest - Hecker fled to the USA.
The castle-like building was erected as a twelve-axis baroque structure in 1779 by Carl Philipp von Venningen and served as an official building.
Today (2020) the sculptor Prof.h.c. Jürgen Goertz in the building.
