The Schwechat has its origins near Schöpfl in the Vienna Woods. Once known as the "Badener Bach", the river runs its course through three districts. Flowing via Baden, Klausen-Leopoldsdorf, Alland, Traiskirchen, Guntramsdorf, Laxenburg, Achau, Maria-Lanzendorf and Lanzendorf, the water flows after a total of 62 kilometers at the Schwechat, the town of the same name, flows into the Danube.

The Schwechat, like the Triesting, is created by the confluence of several spring streams from the Schöpfl area in the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria. The river flows through the Helenental near Baden in the Mostviertel and then the Vienna Basin in the industrial district. The Schwechat River flows into the Danube in the Donau-Auen National Park near the town of Schwechat.

Between Baden near Vienna and the city of Schwechat, the river is partly channeled into artificial watercourses and canals for purposes of use and flood protection.
