Bois-du-Luc is one of the mining sites of Wallonia that has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 2012. The museum is located on the site of the former coal mines of Bois-du-Luc. Operation started in 165, the last mine closed its doors in 1973. Between 1838 and 1853, 162 simple workers' houses were built near the St-Emmanuel shaft and industrial infrastructure was built. Everything was also available when it came to culture, social life, shops and religion; there was even a banquet hall: the mining village was completely independent.

Houdeng-Aimeries is a village in the Belgian municipality of La Louvière in the province of Hainaut. The village contains two UNESCO World Heritage sites; its 16.93 m high boat lift was listed in 1998, together with the other three hydraulic boat lifts on the Canal du Centre near La Louvière and Bois-du-Luc is a former coal mine today preserved as one of the four Walloon mining sites listed in 2012 under the Major Mining Sites of Wallonia.
