The workers' city, also known as the Carré du Bois-du-Luc, is made up of 162 workers' houses built between 1838 and 1853. The coron takes the form of a trapezium divided into four parts by two perpendicular axes. Inside each block, the space left free is divided into gardens. Brick and stone (pilaster crowns, transoms and window sills) are the main materials. The four cardinal points designate the streets and directly evoke mining work (galleries). This type of town planning makes it possible to build a maximum of housing in a limited space and also to exercise permanent surveillance over them. This surveillance is reinforced by the presence of the director's house (1844) which is partially integrated into the city via the north-south axis. To take care of the view of the director on his installations, we decide to embellish the rue du Midi. Pilasters that isolate each house, two avenues of trees and a double width signal the importance of the director. The transition from rue du Midi to rue du Nord takes place via the facades of the grocery store and the café.
