The Niederwartha pumped storage power plant consists of an upper basin and a lower basin. These are connected with three penstocks with a diameter of 2.5 to 3.2 meters and a length of 1,760 meters each. Each one has a water lock (the round visible metal towers), these only serve to compensate for pressure fluctuations as a result of pressure surges that occur, for example, when opening or closing valves.
