"... In 1852 the transport of railway wagons across the Rhine began between Homberg and Ruhrort (hence: Homberg-Ruhrorter Trajektanstalt). For technical reasons, a decision was made to use a ferry instead of a railway bridge in order to connect the railway networks of the left and right Lower Rhine With the help of English engineers, two lifting towers were built to overcome the height difference between the train stations and the Rhine and to safely embark the wagons on the steam-powered ferry pontoons. ..."
