For military reasons, the first railway crossing of the Rhine near Duisburg in 1866 took place not over a bridge but with a ferry connection [see komoot.de/highlight/2827046]. In 1873, the Hochfeld railway bridge was able to open, subject to certain conditions, and remains of which are still preserved today.

In 1927 a new and more efficient bridge went into operation at its current location. It was destroyed by German troops in 1945. American pioneers constructed a temporary bridge that operated for about a year and a half.

The current railway bridge was built in 1945-49 using parts of the blown-up bridge that were still usable.
