The history of Leisnig is closely linked to the town's donkeys. For centuries, taxpayers paid for Leisnig to employ a few dozen donkeys. They carried the heavy grain and flour sacks from the mills on the Mulde over the castle hill to the upper town. For this reason, the mountain town was popularly nicknamed "Eselleisnig".

Approximately in the middle of the castle hill there used to be only one watering hole where the animals could drink before carrying the grain sacks further to the market square. In memory of this watering hole, the Leisnig sculptor Loose created today's donkey fountain. It was inaugurated on July 3, 1938. In 2020, this fountain was rebuilt 👌🏻
