A water mill is mentioned on this site as early as 1313. In 1395 this flour mill came into the possession of the Duke of Gelre; in 1493 the monastery Monnikhuizen near Arnhem acquired the watermill. At the time of the Reformation (ca.1580) the mill came into the possession of the Provincial Executive of the Kwartier van Veluwe. Later the mill became private again, and Daniël de Jongh became owner in 1767. He had the mill converted into a copper mill, where the mill pond was also constructed. In 1858 the leather manufacturer Peter Kok Ankersmit had the mill converted into a flour mill and had a run mill added. This run mill was later converted into a cheese factory.

In 1917, the current building was erected and only grain was ground, with a hydro-powered torque and two diesel-powered couples. This lasted until 1965, when the going work was damaged and the mill had to be shut down. In 1972 the municipality of Apeldoorn acquired the mill. It is managed by the De Wenumse Watermolen Foundation and restored in 1985. There is a party room in part of the building; the mill grinds grain for animal feed on a voluntary basis. The Wenumse Molen can be visited on the first Saturday of the month.

The difference in the water before and after the bridge is spectacular!
