The Schaalsee lies in the middle of the biosphere reserve of the same name. Part of the 24 square kilometer lake is located in Schleswig-Holstein, the other part in Mecklenburg. The lake is up to 72 meters deep, making it the deepest in northern Germany. Due to its location in the middle of the former inner-German border area, the Schaalsee was a refuge for many animals and plant species for decades. In order to protect their living space, bathing is only allowed in designated bathing areas. These can be found in almost all localities on the Schaalsee, for example in Techin, Lassahn, Seedorf, Großzecher, Zarrentin and here in Dargow.
