In the heart of the old town, directly on the market square, the Nikolaikirche shapes the cityscape of Plön. The massive brick building with its 60-meter-high tower replaced a Baroque church that had previously burned down after a lightning strike in 1866-68.
Following the taste of the time, the architecture was inspired by medieval stylistic elements of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, incorporating remnants of the foundation walls that had survived the fire.
Many concerts take place in the Nikolaikirche, from church music to guest performances by Vicky Leandros. Musical highlights are the concerts as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

St. Nicholas Church in Plön, located in Holstein Switzerland in Schleswig-Holstein, is the town's main Evangelical Lutheran church. Originally built in 1691 in the Baroque style, the church building on the market square burned down almost completely in 1864 after being struck by lightning. From 1866 to 1868, St. Nicholas Church was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style.
