The first resident of the castle was the knight Reinhard von Lautern and his family. His son Siegfried was the first to call himself "von Hoheneck". In the 16th century, the Ganerbeburg became too small for the many families who were now living in the castle. The castle was raised and a servants' house and stables were added. In the Palatinate War of Succession in 1688, the castle was destroyed by French troops and not rebuilt. The current inhabitants of the castle hill are a herd of goats that were settled to graze the area.Today the footpath to the castle is named after him

Reinhard von Lautern was the progenitor of the Kaiserslautern ministerial family, which served the emperor and was granted Hohenecken Castle as a fief in the first half of the 13th century. This path to the castle is named after him.
