Maretak (Viscum album) is a plant species from the sandalwood family (Santalaceae). The plant lives on trees and shrubs. It is a hemiparasite. The name 'maretak' is derived from the Old Germanic word mare (witch, nightmare, nocturnal tormentor or ghost). Hanging the plant or a branch of it in the stable would keep the aforementioned evil at bay. The species is also often called birdlime or mistletoe, or referred to by the English name mistletoe. Maretak is a hemiparasite living on living wood that roots in the wood of the host, from which it depends on water and salts.
