In 1868 the Johannis spring was discovered in Bad Kösen. Until 1963, it supplied a brine with a low content of salt, which was used for spa and medicinal purposes.

The fountain house, built in 1909, was restored in 2007 and is reminiscent of the Johannisquelle, which has not been used since the 1960s. Since then, the brine requirement has only been covered by the mine shafts.
