In Bad Kösen the Saale has already covered more than half of its 413 km long river course. The source is near Zell in the Fichtelgebirge in the Upper Franconian part of Bavaria. There in the upper reaches the official name is Saxon Saale (to distinguish it from the Franconian Saale, which flows to the Main). The Saale finally flows into the Elbe near Barby. After the Moldau/Vltava, the Saale is the second longest tributary of the Elbe.
