The three-aisled, neo-Gothic brick hall in six bays, with a staggered choir, was built from 1897 to 1898 based on a design by Josef Kleesattel.

Around the year 1010, the church in Anrath was separated from the Kempen mother parish of St. Peter by Archbishop Heribert and became independent. In 1019, the parish of Anrath was incorporated into the Benedictine abbey of Christ Salvator and Maria Genetrix in Deutz, founded in 1002/1003. The close connection between Anrath and Deutz remained until secularization in 1803. A church in the style of Romanesque country churches was built in the 12th century. Due to the growth of the population, this church no longer met the space requirements in the 19th century: it was demolished at the beginning of 1897, but few parts of the inventory remained.

The three-aisled, neo-Gothic brick hall in six bays, with a stepped choir, was built from 1897 to 1898 according to a design by Josef Kleesattel. The west tower is crowned by an attachment with a pointed helmet. Inside, the cross-ribbed vault rests on clustered pillars. Two octagonal columns from the previous church made of Drachenfels quartzite were inserted into two wall pillars on the north and south sides.

The building has an interior height of 19.2 m, the tower is 78 m high (“top edge of the floor to the ball below the weather vane”).

Saint John the Baptist (also Johannes Baptist), to whom this church is consecrated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. His parents are Zacharias and Elisabeth, after the proclamation of the Incarnation through her, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is six months older than Jesus and is considered to be his forerunner / pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, there Jesus also comes to be baptized, and he is filled with the Holy Spirit, who comes down on him from heaven.

The feast day of John the Baptist (Baptist) in the saints calendar is on June 24th, exactly six months before 'Christmas Eve'.
