Gelnhausen was founded in 1170 by the Staufer Emperor Friedrich I, known as Barbarossa. The Romanesque house on the Untermarkt dates from this period, but the construction of the St. Mary's Church above also began at the end of the 12th century.
Once you have made the considerable climb to the Untermarkt, numerous cafés, restaurants and pubs invite you to take a short or long break.

nice market square that unfortunately has too much space for cars.
The half-timbered houses deserve a nicer ambience than just parked cars.
