The Rifugio Angelo Bosi is not only a charming mountain inn at 2,205 meters with approximately 20 beds, a cozy restaurant, and a private museum – it is also a living memorial to the First World War. Originally used as the Italian headquarters, it was established in the 20th century as a place of remembrance and refreshment. The hut offers insight into the eventful history of the Alpine front.
Summary Historical route to the theaters of war 1915-1918
The Monte Piana towering between Rienz and Popenatal like an oversized rocky wedge has high qualities as a mountain of views: Here you are facing the magnificent dolomite massifs all around at the same height and in due distance, thus allowing their power and size to be fully absorbed. Countless tunnels, trenches and wireweaves remind of the Dolomite war 1915-1918, in which the higher southern summit (Monte Piana, 2324 m) was occupied by the Italians, the northern summit (Monte Piano, 2305 m) of the Austrians. The open-air museum, created between 1977 and 1982 by the "Association of Friends of the Dolomites", can be visited along a »historical circular route«. starting point Large parking lot (subject to charge!) At the Ristorante Genzianella on the road fork Rif. Auronzo / Monte Piana, 200 m north of the pass of Misurina (1752 m, bus stop), 22 km from Dobbiaco, 15 km from Cortina, 24 km from Auronzo. From here by jeep to Rif. Bosi, 2205 m, on the southern edge of the Piana plateau. Jeep traffic between 1. (5.) June and 30. Sept. (5. Okt.) in the 15-Minuten-clock daily from 9.00-17.00 o'clock description From the Rif. Bosi to the upper parking lot of the hut and on way no. 6A on the edge of the Piana plateau, crossing several ropes secured with wire ropes, to the northwest up to the wooden cross on the western plateau edge. To the right (east) up to the south summit (2324 m, Carducci pyramid) and on the other side to the path no. 111. This to the left (north) down to the Forc. dei Castrati, 2272 m. Beyond on the right, then turn right on path nos. 6 and 6A over ropes with wire ropes through the eastern side of the north summit to a junction. Straight ahead (path no. 6A) over meadows upwards and to the left into the north side to the Kaiserjägerstollen. A little further up, then on bands across a vertical wall to the Dobbiaco Cross, 2305 m, of the northern summit. Even before the cross, turn right to a ribbon, on this (wire rope) under the Dobbiaco Cross, turn left down to the crossing »Pioneer Path« (No. 6). On it a concrete staircase (or left through a tunnel) up again to the plateau and over them (way no. 6) south to Forc. dei Castrati. Beyond the south summit up to the path no. 122 and on it left down to the Rif. Bosi. Jeep transfer to the large parking lot.
