Old quarry at the Teufelsloch

The limestone hilltops are part of the Natura 2000 area in the Eschweiler Valley. It is very diverse and is particularly important for the biotope network in the Voreifel.
The entire Natura 2000 area extends over the northern part of the area between Eschweiler, Iversheim and Kalkar.
There are orchid-rich brome semi-dry grasslands, forest areas, bushes, poor grassland and quarries. The largest semi-dry grasslands are located on Kuttenberg and Wachendorfer Berg.
In addition, many animal species such as the green woodpecker, wood lizard, little kingfisher, slowworm, dipper, corncrake, eagle owl, kestrel, tree falcon, grass snake and sand lizard are at home there.
