The horse-drawn railway Budweis – Linz – Gmunden, opened in sections between 1827 and 1836, was the second public railway line on the European mainland (after the Saint-Étienne – Andrézieux line) and was mainly used to transport salt from the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut to Bohemia.

Today, the tram from Gmunden to the next villages does not quite follow the old route.
In addition to the rails, there is the horse-drawn railway trail. At various points you will learn something about the old route.
There is a small vantage point here (from which you can also see a bit of the lake).
