According to legend, Duke Ulrich, who had angered the population with constant tax increases and was driven out by the Swabian League, hid in the cave at Ulrichstein during his flight in 1519. There, he was supposedly supplied with food by farmers. As a token of gratitude, he later granted the farmers of Nürtingen-Hardt complete tax exemption.
