Here in the middle of the village there is a very interesting information board that describes how Mechow came to the British Zone through an area swap.

In the Mecklenburg State Calendar of 1926, the village Mechow with 44 inhabitants and the Gutgemeinde Hof Mechow with 143 inhabitants are listed under Mechow.
Then came the war and the division of Germany: Mechow, as part of an area swap in 1945, together with Bäk, Römnitz and Ziethen, moved from the Soviet occupation zone to the British one, thus extending the historical range from Mecklenburg-Strelitz to Schleswig-Holstein.

Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, the structural situation of Mechow has changed radically. The community is tying threads that have been severed in the past four and a half decades. However, the orientation to the west prevails. Despite the fact that Mechow is a small and “quiet” village, it has a very good infrastructure. The district town of Ratzeburg is less than 2 km away and can therefore also be reached quickly by bike, and the A 20 is also easily accessible via MV in a short time. The children therefore attend the joint kindergarten in Bäk or go to school in Ratzeburg. Regular bus transport also ensures a safe journey to school.
