The Peñarroya Reservoir, like many others across Spain, was built during the Franco dictatorship. Its main purpose is to supply drinking water to nearby towns and irrigate the fields of La Mancha. It is also well-known among fishing enthusiasts who flock to the reservoir's shores every weekend in search of a photograph-worthy catch.
In summer, the Peñarroya Reservoir is the second most popular bathing destination within the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park.

The reservoir is an ideal place for bathing and fishing. Above all, on hot summer days, its turquoise blue waters are very inviting. Lonely natural beaches can be found by following the trails that surround it.

It is wonderful to pedal next to this reservoir, which usually has a good water level in spring.
